Plan ahead for the gardening season

Although it is frigid and snowy outside, each day is getting longer and March will spring upon us soon! If you want more out of your garden, now is the time to get scheming.

First, you have to know what you want from your space. Are you looking for a shady spot for outdoor activities, or do you want to start an organic garden? So, the first step is to make a wish list for your garden.

Step 2 is to create a scaled drawing of the existing grounds. Measure up all existing structures and plants, and use a ruler and triangle to transfer these measurements to paper. A common scale to use is 8 feet equals one inch.

Next, take the existing conditions plan and overlay it with tracing paper. Now you can start designing the layout. Draw a loose schematic plan to make sure that everything works on paper. This way you can make sure there will be enough room for all your planned activities or plants, and to verify that there is enough sunlight, and the flow of traffic will work well.

With a loose schematic plan in hand, you can refine your ideas into a polished plan with dimensions and quantities, so that you can order your plants or stones ahead of time. Having a drawn plan also helps when you solicit prices from contractors, because it insures that you are comparing apples with apples.

And of course, if anyone needs help with planning or designing their garden projects, I would be happy to help. Any excuse to get outside at this time of year would be welcomed!
